      Understanding Asbestos

Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring silicate minerals divided into two categories: serpentine (curly fibers) and amphibole (straight, needle-like fibers).

      • Chrysotile (White Asbestos): Curly, flexible fibers, the most common type, used in roofing, brake pads, insulation, and floor tiles.
      • Amosite (Brown Asbestos): Straight, brittle fibers, used in insulation, cement sheets, and pipe insulation.
      • Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos): Brittle, thin fibers, highly hazardous, used in steam engine insulation and cement.
      • Tremolite: Straight fibers, not widely used, but found as a contaminant in talc, vermiculite, and chrysotile.
      • Actinolite: Dark, needle-like fibers, rarely used, but present in some insulation and construction materials.
      • Anthophyllite: Gray-green fibers, rarely used, but found in some cement and insulation.

Chrysotile is the most flexible, while amphibole types (e.g., crocidolite, amosite) are more brittle and dangerous due to their sharp, lung-penetrating fibers. All types are harmful when inhaled.
