      Understanding Asbestos

Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring silicate minerals divided into two categories: serpentine (curly fibres) and amphibole (straight, needle-like fibres).

      • Chrysotile (White Asbestos): Curly, flexible fibres, the most common type, used in roofing, brake pads, insulation, and floor tiles.
      • Amosite (Brown Asbestos): Straight, brittle fibres, used in insulation, cement sheets, and pipe insulation.
      • Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos): Brittle, thin fibres, highly hazardous, used in steam engine insulation and cement.
      • Tremolite: straight fibres, not widely used but found as a contaminant in talc, vermiculite and chrysotile.
      • Actinolite: Dark, needle-like fibres, rarely used, but present in some insulation and construction materials.
      • Anthophyllite: Grey-green fibres, rarely used, but found in some cement and insulation.

Chrysotile is the most flexible type. Amphibole types, such as crocidolite and amosite, are more brittle and particularly dangerous because their sharp fibres penetrate the lungs. All types of asbestos are harmful if inhaled.
